e-Communications reflection

e-Communication has definitely been a huge blessing in my life. It has shown me my passion and has given me options with what I want to pursue in life.  I joined my sophomore year because I never really knew what it was my freshman year. Through the course of being in e-Comm for 3 years, I have gained many skills. I’ve learned how to set up cameras, set up interviews, edit videos, make websites, and set up a blog. I’ve also learned how to collaborate with others to create videos and stories. These skills are important to life because they will help with my future career field and they will help me able to work with other people through out life.
My greatest strengths are collaborating with people to create stories and editing videos. My weaknesses are probably not working super fast. I like to take my time with videos, so I am able to make them the best I possibly can. I am considering majoring in either sports broadcasting or film editing, so I can use these skills later on in life.
If I could change anything about this program, I would change the way things are handled. I would make sure that I wouldn’t schedule the senior showcase on athletic nights because it screws seniors, who have put so many years and hours into this program, from getting endorsed. I would also make sure things are communicated better. I had no idea I could have gone and presented my senior portfolio at a different time to get endorsed, not one e-Comm teacher communicated that with me.

I think this program helps students get really far in the broadcast/journalism world. I think it’s a great program, but with everything it has its flaws.

Barbara Walters 10 Most Fascinating People: Blog Review

There are fascinating people are all over the world, but only a few tend to stick out. Barbara Walters takes the few that stick out and draws more attention to who they are, how they grow up, and what they have done to make themselves fascinating.

In the 2014 edition of 10 Most Fascinating People, Barbara Walters brought on a wide variety people. She interviewed people from Scarlett Johansson, to Neil Patrick Harris, to Chelsea Handler. It was super cool being able to hear about each person was able to build their own ways towards fame and success. Scarlett Johansson's home life that consisted of a semi-wealthy family was a completely different upbringing from Chelsea Handler's mormon family that struggled to put food on the table.

The interviews that were conducted in this show were almost flawless. The camera was set up perfectly to make sure that the Rule of Thirds was used properly and the lighting was super flattering on everyone. Also, not all of the interviews were conducted in the same place, so we got a variety of different settings. Also, the b-roll fit perfectly for what was being talked about on the screen. Whenever the topic of upbringing came up, pictures and family videos would be shown. When the topic of career came up, videos and pictures of celebrities old films and them at movie premiers would be shown.

In my personal opinion, I didn't really enjoy the introductions of the interviews that Barbara Walters did. I thought they were super cheesy and the setting just didn't fit well. She also didn't really tell us much of why she chose that specific person to be on the show. Why did that person stick out? What did they do in this particular year that they hadn't done in other years to make them fascinating?

I think that this is show is a really good one. It is a great idea and I think it could actually work really well with ONW Now. We could interview students, and or teachers who have some some really cool things and have led fascinating lives and show the student body the fascinating people they are walking the halls with.

Motion Photography

Over the summer, I got the opportunity to go to Mexico with some really good friends of mine and their moms! I was able to take my dad's really nice DLSR camera with me to document my trip. When I was using the camera down there, I discovered that I have a real passion for photography. As soon as I got home from Mexico, I emailed my school counselor to make sure I got enrolled in our photography course for the upcoming school year.

I absolutely LOVE my photography class. I find so much joy in being able to go out around the school to take pictures and edit them to how I want them to look. It feels super natural having a camera in my hands. I think I get my photography passion from my grandpa. He was always taking pictures of me as a kid and he always has a camera in his hand whenever we are on vacation.

The past week or two, my photography class was working on motion photography. Motion photography is when a picture is taken of something that is moving. We worked on four different Motion Photography techniques: panning, stop action, zoom pan, and motion blur. The panning technique is used when you want a picture's background to be blurry but the thing that is in action will be crisp. The stop action technique is used when you want everything in the photo to be clear. You use zoom pan to make it look like lines in the photo are running out of the photo, and finally you use motion blur to keep everything crisp except for the object is moving. My favorite technique definitely was stop action. I thought it was super cool to get someone moving through the air and get it to be super clear.

Word from the Halls: Royals

THE KANSAS CITY ROYALS TOOK THE CROWN!!

The KC Royals seem to be all KC has been talking about lately, so that gave Ryley and I the wonderful idea to make a Word from the Halls about the Royals! The questions were fairly easy for our Raven family to answer considering everyone seems to know about them!

If you're a Royals fan you'll definitely enjoy this video!

Word from the Halls: Cheer

Cheerleading is an up and coming activity that is becoming VERY popular throughout the United States! Ryley and I had decided that we wanted to try and trick some of the students and teachers about the things that happen within cheerleading!

This video not only contains questions we asked our students to answer, but we also asked them to demonstrate a few cheerleading techniques! The video definitely got a few laughs and was one of our funnier videos!

Word From The Halls: Volleyball

Word From The Halls is back this year and better than ever! Ryley and I are are back at it, bombarding the student body with questions over volleyball. Not only are we doing volleyball because it's a video we haven't done yet, but our own ONW Volleyball team is ranked 7th in the NATION!

We asked the student body some not well-known facts about the sport and we also asked some of the students to demonstrate some volleyball moves like what a spike is and what a volleyball roll is! This was our first video back into the school year and I'm proud of how it turned out! I had a lot of people come up to me in the halls after it was shown and they were expressing how much they missed our videos and they are glad they are back!

Here is the video!

Miracle Shot

What not many students of Olathe Northwest know is that 5 years ago girls basketball coach, Joel Branstrom, made a blindfolded, half-court shot that no one had expected him to make. This video is a recap of the event to celebrate the 5 year anniversary of the shot.

Students at ONW who were apart of Raven Flight Corps, otherwise known as RFC, approached coach Branstrom asking him if he would would have any interest of being apart of whats now known as the "miracle shot." They had persuaded him with Final Four tickets, saying they would he his if he actually made the shot. Coach Branstrom agreed to the event, not expecting much to come out of it. The students had planned on blindfolding Branstrom, spinning him around, and then cheer like he made the shot, even if he didn't. The students weren't expecting what was about to happen next.
